Have you ever searched for the elusive fountain of youth? If you’ve ventured to St. Augustine, FL, you might have come across it. But today, we’re not talking about that legendary spring.

Many people are on a quest to look and feel youthful. The anti-aging market is projected to be a $455.4 billion industry by 2030. But what exactly is anti-aging? Is it really possible to slow or even reverse aging?

It’s common to hear about age-related complaints – achy joints, vision and hearing loss, sagging and wrinkled skin, increased health issues, and the growing list of medications to manage. But here’s some good news: it is possible to maintain vibrant health and stay young looking well into your later years. We’ll show you how!

What Does Anti-Aging Mean?

Anti-aging can mean a few different things, depending on who you’re talking to. For many, it’s purely aesthetic – they want to look young. They will use face and body creams, plastic surgery, botox injections, medspa treatments, or other tools to maintain their youthful appearance.

To others, it’s not so much about appearance, but to feel good on the inside (which often translates to outer appearances). Longevity, chronic disease prevention, and quality of life into the later years is the goal. Chronological age is the number of years you’ve lived, while biological age reflects how well your body is aging based on factors like lifestyle, genetics, and overall health. Depending on these factors, you can have a biological age that is younger or older than your chronological age.

There’s not necessarily one “cure” for aging, but rather a culmination of factors practiced for years that lead to long-term health. Let’s look to the blue zones to see how they do it.

What are Blue Zones?

There are 5 places around the world where people consistently live over 100 years old without chronic disease. The name blue zones come from the work of scientists who simply drew blue circles on a map highlighting villages of extreme longevity. Through studying their lifestyles, scientists discovered 9 habits common to each of these 5 zones:

  1. Move naturally – live a lifestyle that encourages more movement
  2. Purpose – “why I wake up in the morning”
  3. Downshift – routines that eliminate stress like naps, prayer, or happy hour
  4. 80% rule – stop eating when your stomach is 80% full
  5. Plant slant – beans make up a big part of the diet
  6. Wine at 5 – 1-2 glasses of wine daily
  7. Right tribe – surround yourself with healthy-minded people
  8. Loved ones first – elderly parents and grandparents live nearby
  9. Belong – participate in a faith-based community

While we agree with most of these habits, alcohol should always be used in moderation, or none at all. The blue zones model shows how you can live a longer, healthier life no matter where you live.

The 5-Point Model System: A Framework for Longevity

We regularly talk about our 5-Point Model System to restore and regenerate prime health. The focus areas include (1) natural hormones, (2) nutrition, (3) toxins, (4) mind/ heart, and (5) body. By addressing these factors, you set yourself up for long-term health.

Natural Hormones

As you age, whether you’re a man or woman, your hormone levels decline. Hormone imbalances throughout the lifecycle can cause numerous problems. Balancing sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can work wonders for your sleep, skin, sex drive, mood, energy, and heart and brain health. These anti-aging effects can help you feel young and vibrant into your later years.

Nutrition

A Mediterranean-style diet can help slow down the visible signs of aging and improve overall vitality.[6] Include more whole grains, healthy protein, fruits and vegetables, beans, and healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and omega-3s, and less red meat, sweets, pastries, or soft drinks.

If we look at the blue zones (some of which are in Mediterranean regions), a large emphasis is placed on plants, particularly beans, which are a staple in these long-lived communities. Beans are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and protein, helping to reduce inflammation which is a key factor in healthy aging.[7]

Gut health plays a major role in skin health and aging. Your gut bacteria, or microbiome, controls inflammation that can affect your entire body, including your skin. Fiber-rich foods and fermented and cultured foods can decrease inflammation that ultimately impacts skin aging.[8] A study using oral probiotic supplementation with the beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum resulted in improved skin hydration, elasticity and gloss, and reduced wrinkle depth.[9]

Toxins

Environmental toxicity accelerates aging.[10] Avoiding pollutants begins in your immediate environment with the food you eat, cleaning products you use, beauty regimens, and quitting harmful habits like smoking. Ironically, many skincare products—even anti-aging products-–are toxic! The Environmental Working Group Skin Deep Database rates skin and body care products based on ingredient purity.

Mind/ Heart

The blue zones focus on stress management, having a purpose, and community involvement as key factors for mental health. People who are chronically stressed can experience accelerated aging.[4] It can even prematurely cause grey hair![5] To optimize mental health and improve stress resilience, we encourage finding restoration in nature, meditation, joy, sleep, deep breathing, acupuncture, and a technique called Heart Math.

Body

People in the blue zones move their bodies regularly. Numerous studies show that regular exercise is preventive of many chronic diseases and increases life expectancy by up to 6.9 years![1] If you’re sitting for long periods, schedule breaks to stand up and stretch, do squats, lift weights, or take a quick walk. Create more opportunities to move – park farther away at the grocery store, walk or ride a bike instead of driving, find workout videos you love – your body was built to move! Working with a health coach is a helpful way to create a plan that works for you.

Together, aerobic exercise (cardio) and resistance training (weightlifting) are effective anti-aging strategies for the skin. Exercise increases dermal thickness, which firms and prevents sagging skin, and improves elasticity, which helps plump skin and prevents wrinkles. Myokines are anti-inflammatory substances released from muscle responsible for these skin benefits.[2] Age-related muscle loss, called sarcopenia, can be prevented by staying active.[3]

Peptides have become popular for overall body health. These natural proteins trigger collagen production, immune responses, weight loss, skin health, libido, and muscle repair. This adjunctive treatment works nicely alongside diet and lifestyle changes to get the results you’re looking for more quickly.

How Can I Stay Looking Young Forever?

We do realize people not only want to feel young but want to look young. Following the 5-Point Model System helps keep skin hydrated, nourished, and toned.

Specific aesthetic treatments can provide additional benefits. Personalized skin care treatments like chemical peels and peel alternatives, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, Procell Microchanneling, and Celluma LED, and others have numerous rejuvenating skin effects. These treatments stimulate collagen to tighten and plump skin, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce scarring, treat hyperpigmentation, and more.

Botox® is an injection that temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles like crow’s feet, frown lines, or forehead lines. This non-surgical treatment helps to enhance your overall look. You’re still able to make all your usual facial expressions but with fewer lines. It’s even preventive of new wrinkles!
